Our Church History
The Walter Hill Chapel held its first meeting on December 1, 1968 in the Walter Hill School building under the guidance of Maney Avenue Baptist Church in Murfreesboro. Brother E. C. Sisk served as our first pastor. We became affiliated with Third Baptist Church on July 1, 1970 with 22 members. On Sunday, December 10th, 1978, the mission was constituted as Walter Hill First Baptist Church.
The property on which our church stands was a gift to the Concord Baptist Association by the Aldron family of LaVergne. Ground breaking for our new building was held in April 1971. A new educational building was dedicated on January 15, 1984. In 1985, we began to enlarge and remodel our old auditorium. The first service in our current auditorium was Easter 1997. Renovation of the old auditorium started in late summer of 1999, converting it to Sunday School space with a pastor's study and church office. The newly renovated area was occupied in January 2000.
The Lord has blessed our church family with many leaders. Pastors who have served are: E. C. Sisk (1968-1972), Hall Youree (1972-1976), J. H. Harvey (1976-1977), Don Wilson (1977-1978), Ron Odom (1978-1982), Roy Bunch (1982-1994), Bill Fox (1994-1995), Darrel Whaley (1995-1998), Murray Mathis (1998-2001), Shelby Smith (2002-present).
Today there are many leaders who make possible ministries that touch every age group. We serve together by the empowerment of the Holy Spirit that we might all grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. Our ultimate goal is to love God with all our hearts and to be instruments of His loe to others. We desire to glorify God in all we do.
We have seen many changes since that first meeting in a little country schoolhouse on a cold December Sunday in 1968. Our membership is growing and God is continually blessing us with great leaders, teachers and financial support! Above all, people are coming to Christ for salvation!
As we stand together to face the future, may we keep our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our Faith. Jesus alone is the source of our strength, our hope and the direction of our church. He is the Head of His body - the church!
"See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God: and such we are." (1 John 3:1)
